Your footage looks sharp in your editor. Then you upload it to Instagram and it looks like you filmed it through a shower door. That’s not your camera. That’s your export settings and how Instagram handles your file the moment it lands on their servers.

This guide fixes that. You’ll get the exact numbers, tool-specific steps for CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro plus two upload tricks that most creators still don’t know about.

Why Instagram Compresses Your Reels

Instagram compresses every video you upload. No exceptions. Their servers re-encode your file to reduce storage costs and speed up playback across different devices and connections.

The problem isn’t compression itself. The problem is giving Instagram a bad file to work with. When you export at the wrong settings, Instagram’s compression compounds your mistakes. Bad export plus Instagram compression equals blurry, pixelated video.

The goal is simple: give Instagram a clean, well-encoded file and keep the file size in a range that doesn’t trigger their aggressive compression algorithm. Think of it like this, a 300MB file gets crushed harder than a 60MB file, even if both look identical in your editor.

A quick note on H.265: modern smartphones shoot in H.265 by default and Instagram now handles it well. If you’re exporting from Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, H.265 can deliver slightly better quality at smaller file sizes. But H.264 is still the safer, more compatible choice and especially if you’re also posting that video to TikTok or YouTube Shorts.

On frame rate 30fps is the standard. If you shot action footage or slow-motion content at 60fps and want that smooth look, go ahead and export at 60fps. Instagram supports it. Just know your file will be larger and Instagram may compress it slightly harder.

The Core Export Settings (Works for Every Editor)

CapCut

CapCut is where most creators work, so let’s start here.

After you finish editing, tap the export arrow in the top right. You’ll see resolution and frame rate options pop up. Set resolution to 1080p not 2K or 4K. This surprises people but it’s intentional. Instagram caps Reels playback at 1080p. Exporting at 4K from CapCut just creates a bigger file that Instagram will compress more aggressively on upload. 1080p exports cleanly.

Set frame rate to 30fps unless your footage is 60fps slow-motion content. It doesn’t give you direct bitrate control on mobile but at 1080p and 30fps it typically exports around 20 Mbps, which sits right in the sweet spot.

Before you export, check one thing in your project settings: make sure your canvas is 1080 × 1920 (9:16 vertical). If you’re working on a horizontal clip that you manually resized, double-check that there are no black bars on the sides. Check both Render at Maximum Depth and Use Maximum Render Quality. These two boxes add export time but they give you the cleanest output Premiere can produce.

VBR 2-Pass means Premiere goes through your video twice before encoding. The result is a smaller file with better visual quality than single-pass or CBR encoding.

Exporting at the wrong canvas size
